Three Brothers Burgers

Lovers of Filth I ask you, what’s better than some early evening drinks in the sun, followed by some Filthy burgers? Not a lot is your answer and if you don’t agree with me, I will fight you*

*not a genuine threat, please don’t hurt me.

Eat Drink Bristol Fashion is becoming a very regular staple for Queen Square. Each year the Tipis come along and take over the square,  turning it in to a pretty awesome bar/venue/restaurant/evening hangout/something else, probably… And we will usually take a few trips there to soak up some rays, and have a few casual drinks. Saturday evening was no exception, as we headed down for the last of the night’s sun (even though it was kind of hidden behind trees), but we weren’t planning on eating there, although it does offer some pretty delicious looking food. No – we planned on going to Three Brothers Burgers.

Tipis!

After building up our appetites we trotted along to Welsh Back where Three Brothers Burgers is situated, part on land, part on a boat. It was pretty busy inside, so we had to wait around 10 minutes for a table – yea, we didn’t bother booking, we live life on the edge! After being seated, it was time to get serious and it was time to think about burgers.

The menu is kept pretty simple, with a handful of ‘classic’ burger options available. I opted for the Smokey Bro Burger which consists of a patty topped with smoked Applewood cheddar, sweet cured bacon, house-made relish and crispy onions. The others picked the Bacon Cheeseburger, and the Blue Brothers Burger. When you order they ask you how you’d like you burger cooked, a nice touch, with the ‘default’ being pink in the middle.

Now, usually I take issue with having to buy sides, I believe that your burger and fries should all come under the same meal. But with Three Brothers Burger, the meal without fries, is actually reflected in the price, with most burgers coming in at around £8 or under, so it’s not so much of an issue.

Speaking of fries – holy cheesus! We opted for the Chilli Cheese Fries – a hefty portion of fries topped with Monterey Jack cheese and covered in slow cooked beef brisket chilli, jalapeños and sour cream. Epic! We also ordered a side of deep fried pickles with ranch dip.

With it being busy, I guess the burgers took a little longer to come out, but honestly I didn’t notice. Our waitress was polite enough to come over and let us know that they wouldn’t be too much longer without us having to ask (not that I was going to anyway), which I thought was another nice touch. Clearly, they wanted to provide some good service.

When they did come, oh my, it was a glorious sight. Served all on one big tray, the shiny burger buns had me drooling with anticipation.

The burger itself was perfectly cooked. Give it a little squeeze and some lovely burger juices oozed out from middle. The grind of the mince was a pretty much perfect consistency, and it tasted oh-so-good.

The bun was so shiny. It was also very, very good. It was robust enough to stay together, but light enough to not make you feel like you’ve eaten a loaf of bread. I don’t think any more needs to be said about it.

Don’t you just hate it when you get a bit of bacon fat dangling from your mouth after a bite? Thankfully this didn’t happen to me, the bacon was spot on, cooked just how I like it, and it had a lovely hint of sweetness to it.

The toppings in general are kept pretty simple. Classics like the aforementioned bacon, jalapenos, crispy onion, various cheeses, you know the drill. It’s no frills stuff, but it’s done very well. The crispy onions made a nice addition that I wasn’t expecting.

Personally, I prefer my toppings to be a little more outrageous, but that’s just me.

Quite possibly the star of the show was the sides, or more specifically the Chilli Cheese Fries –  they were simply immense. Not only were the fries delicious, but the chilli – with super meaty chunks of beef brisket – was amazing. The brisket was melt in your mouth perfection, the fries soaked up the chilli juices to create a glorious chip-chilli combination…I… I need more, right now!

I’m not such a huge fan of pickles and gherkins, but I don’t mind them when they’re deep fried. However, I’m assured by lovers of pickles  that they’re pretty top notch.

There we have it, a very impressive 17.5 out of 20.

It may be early days but Three Brothers Burgers  are serious contenders for top burger in my books. Not only do they provide excellent food, but they back that up with great service, friendly (but not too friendly) staff, and they give you blankets in case you get cold – how fucking cool is that?! Sure, you don’t really need them now that it’s warming up, but it’s still pretty cool.

We all left extremely satisfied, and very full up.

Needless to say, I will be going back, even if it’s just to try one of their milkshakes.
